Tackers is an introductory, fun, games-based sailing program designed for kids aged 7 to 12. Kids don’t need to have any prior sailing experience. The only requirement is that they must be ready to have fun!! All equipment is provided.
If you have a child who is younger than 7 and is showing signs that they are keen to give sailing a try, it’s possible to enrol them into a 2 hour taster. Little Tackers allows children to build confidence on and around the water while wearing their lifejackets. Small group size means safe, fun sessions on the water.
There are three levels to the Tackers program that your child can progress through:
Each level involves 15 hours of participation structured as a 5 day holiday program or as series of sessions over several weeks after-school. Kids receive a Tacker kit and a certificate of achievement at the completion of every program.
The Tackers program is delivered in small groups by a Yachting Australia qualified Instructor and Assistant Instructors.
In Tackers 1 – Having Fun sailing kids sail in pairs in small boats. It’s a great way to meet new friends and kids have the chance to sail with different kids in their group.
The next level is Tackers 2 – Tricks & Techniques. If kids are confident, they can sail a boat on their own with lots of support, supervision and encouragement from the Instructor and Assistant Instructors.
The final level of the Tackers program is Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast! This is a chance for the kids to sail boats on their own, learning how to make the boat go faster and playing more games all whilst still under the guidance and support of the Instructor and Assistant Instructors.
In between the Tackers levels you have the option of attending practice sessions where kids can get together and work on improving their sailing skills. This is called ‘Tackers Squad‘.
The fun doesn’t stop when kids finish Tackers 3. SYC offers a ‘Green Fleet’ program for the kids to progress onto. Green Fleet is a type of introductory fun racing where kids learn how to go round a race course with kids of similar ability where the main focus is on enjoyment.
