The First Aid level II course is based around first aid in a Marine setting and the course is presented with an emphasis on the issues that may confront the off shore sailor. The certificate is required to be held by at least two crew members undertaking a Category 1 race, and by one crew member undertaking a Category 2 race. All ocean or longer off shore races are at least Category 2. The course will cover emergency assessment and management and administration of First Aid, including CPR.
Please Note: Level 2 certificates are valid for 3 years, so this is your opportunity to re-certify prior to the 2010/11 ocean racing season.
The First Aid Level II course includes the following points:
1. Resuscitation giving a high degree of confidence in C.P.R.
2. Burns
3. Bleeding
4. Fractures
5. Acute Illnesses
6. Poisoning
7. Bites and Stings
Prior to attending the course you are required to complete the pre-course workbook. Training material is provided and will be available to pick up from SYC Boating reception 10 days prior to commencement. Alternatively you have the option of completing the required pre-course study online.
The course is usually conducted over 2 days, so in order to obtain the qualification the flexible learning option requires the majority of the theory to be completed prior to attending the course.
The 1-day in the classroom (9.30am - 5.00pm) then focuses on the practical applications and skills of the qualification along with recapping the underpinning theory. Essential knowledge and skills that must be demonstrated to achieve competency will be assessed throughout the classroom based activities. This will include practical demonstrations of skills and a multiple choice theory assessment.
As the course has practical components we recommend that participants wear comfortable clothing and that women long wear long trousers or shorts. The resuscitation usually requires you to kneel on the floor.
