Category description:
Consolidating from the Adult Keelboat Basic Skills 1 course, which is a prerequisite, this course is intended to expand upon the skills and knowledge necessary to rig and sail a small keelboat to the best advantage, using a variety of techniques under minimal guidance.
This course comprises of two, six hour sessions (over two successive weeks) and will be delivered through a combination of classroom and on-water work in a Beneteau 7.5 Keelboat.

Manoeuvres
- Tacking, gybing, points of sailing, basic heave-to, primary boat controls, positions on the boat and helming with minimal guidance
Man overboard (MOB) procedures and drills, towing procedures
Launching and recovery
- Coming alongside to a fixed/anchored structure
- Launching and recovery of craft.
Sailing Theory and background
- Avoiding collisions
- Right-of-way rules
- Power/sail right
- Port/starboard
- Windward/leeward
- Keeping to the right of channels
- Overtaking vessels
Meteorology and Winds, tides and currents
- Weather awareness for safe inshore sailing
- Gust and lulls
- Tides - times between tides
- Reading tide tables
- Direction of tidal flow
