Category description:


This course is intended to provide students with the essential skills and knowledge necessary to rig and sail a small keelboat to the best advantage, using a variety of techniques under supervison.

This course comprises of two, six hour sessions (over two successive weeks) and will be delivered through a combination of classroom work and on-water work in a Beneteau 7.5 Keelboat.  There are no pre requisites for the beginner course.

 
The Course Covers:

    • Prepare and Plan - Group and individual safety awareness, clothing, safety equipment, sailing boundaries
    • Rigging - wind awareness, awareness of parts of and rigging the training boat
    • Ropework – Figure of eight, round turn and two half hitches, reef knot, bowline
    • Sailing Techniques - Sailing to windward, reaching and sailing downwind
    • Manoeuvres - tacking, gybing, points of sailing, basic heave-to, primary boat controls, positions on the boat
    • Man overboard (MOB) procedures and drills, towing procedures
    • Coming alongside to a fixed/anchored structure, launching and recovery of craft.
    • Sailing Theory and Basic right-of-way Rules - avoiding collisions, power/sail right, port/starboard, windward/leeward, keep to the right of channels, overtaking vessels
    • Weather awareness for safe inshore sailing
    • Prepare and Plan - Group and individual safety awareness, clothing, safety equipment, sailing boundaries

 


 

 

The time schedule for each day is:
0900-1200 
30 min lunch (not provided ~ can be purchased at SYC)
1230-1530
 


 

Recommended clothing ~ What to bring?

  • Wetsuits are great all year round however if you do not have a wetsuit; wear thermal layers (not cotton) as a base layer. Mid and outer layers for all students should be a polar fleece or woollen jumper with a windbreaker over the top.
  • Shoes or wetsuit booties are required to be worn at all times.
  • A towel and change of clothes are recommended for after the class as showers facilties are available.
  • During the colder months a beanie should be worn and throughout the warmer months a broad rimmed or peaked hat.
  • Sunscreen.
