Category description:

Run over four weeks this course is the first step in Yachting Australia's GET INTO SMALL BOATS SCHEME.  It is an ideal introduction with the course designed to progressively teach participants how to sail dinghies.

There are two components to this course: Tackers 1 and Tackers 2.  Our courses are conducted by experienced and qualified instructors.

The course covers:

* Rigging
* Ropework
* Sailing techniques and manoeuvres
* Rescue procedures
* Safety awareness
* Launching and recovery
* Sailing theory and background
* Meteorology
* Winds, tides and currents

The object of this course is to introduce participants into Sailing and gradually build up their skills and confidence.  For Tackers, the Academy utilises a fleet of Optimist dinghies.  These boats are an internationally approved class, single-sailed, highly stable and easily handled by one or two 8-14 year olds.

Friends are encouraged to learn together and where possible, trainees are grouped with children of a similar age and ability.

Life jackets are provided however participants are encouraged to be prepared with an old woollen jumper, shorts or pants, spray jacket, old sandshoes, hat and sunscreen.  Showers will be available so a warm change of clothes and a towel is recommended.  Wet suits are ideal all year round.
