Adult Dinghy Basic Skills 2 is the second stage in Yachting Australia's GET INTO SMALL BOATS SCHEME and the goal of this course is to extend your knowledge of sailing well beyond those learned in Basic Skills 1.
This course covers:
- Sailing techniques and manoeuvres
- Sailing to windward
- Sailing downward
- Gybing and tacking
- Points of sailing
- Helming with minimal guidance
- Launching and recovery
- Care of equipment
- Coming alongside/docking to fixed/anchored structure
- Rescue procedures
- Crew recovery drill
- Capsize recovery
- Safety and individual awareness
- Clothing
- Safety equipment
- Sailing stretches
- Sailing theory and background
- Right of way rules (collision regulations)
- Port/starboard
- Windward/leeward
- Keep to the right of channels
- Overtaking vessels
- Rigging
- Independant rigging of training boat

- The object of this course is to have students skipper and crew a two person boat safely and with confidence in moderate conditions.
Classes are run using the Academy's fleet of Pacer dinghys and the course often concludes with a passage to Black Rock or a mini regatta.
Recommended clothing ~ What to bring?
- Wetsuits are great all year round however if you do not have a wetsuit; wear thermal layers (not cotton) as a base layer. Mid and outer layers for all students should be a polar fleece or woollen jumper with a windbreaker over the top.
- Shoes or wetsuit booties are required to be worn at all times.
- A towel and change of clothes are recommended for after the class as showers facilties are available.
- During the colder months a beanie should be worn and throughout the warmer months a broad rimmed or peaked hat.
- Sunscreen.
